Rabbit Hole (2010)
Directed by John Cameron Mitchell
Starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart
rklenseth's Star Rating:
Rabbit Hole is a well acted but depressing drama starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as a couple who have recently lost their young son. Each of the two main characters is trying to cope with the loss of their child in their own way. Becca (Kidman) is obviously depressed and wanting to forget about the child that she has lost while her husband Howie (Eckhart) doesn't want to forget. In one key scene, Howie confronts his wife about a video of their son that has been deleted from his cell phone that he was keeping and Becca nonchalantly admits to mistakenly deleting the video but in a way that gives the audience the belief that she may have done it on purpose. At the same time, Howie also wishes to move on and continue his family with a new child but Becca does not as she is stuck in a depressive mood. This is the conflict that one witnesses throughout the film between the husband and wife.
Kidman is excellent as the dismal Becca. She is able to express the full range of emotions that are required for this type of role and she does it expertly. Eckhart is also just as good as Howie but his character didn't have the opportunity to express the type of raw emotion that Kidman had to for her character. The rest of the cast in a supporting role is good with Dianne Wiest standing out as Becca's mother.
And when I said before that this film is depressing I'm not saying that is a bad thing but be prepared for this moody drama that deals with the death of a young child and his parent's mourning.
In conclusion, this film is a satisfactory dark drama with strong acting and a story that may be too depressing for some.
